Understanding resolutions can be a challenge. I clearly remember the days of questioning what all these mysterious statistics signify. The primary key to consider is that the increased the resolution, the better the product.

With music, you will generally see terms like 48kHz or 24bit. The first one, kilo-Hertz or also kHz, signifies the size of the sound spectrum. Humans can officially hear from 20hz to 20kHz, though individuals may be able to listen to a much higher frequency. For most online video, 44kHz will be the most popular of the resolutions.

Using Google+ for Video Podcasting

The guys over at did a cool experiment with Google+ for recording a video podcast:

What we did was extremely simple:

Create a private G+ Hangout with those video podcasting

Use Camtasia, set the recording area to a custom size that fits the Hangout video

Press the record button and start your podcast!

I had to use a microphone that recorded the sound coming out of my laptop speaker, so sound quality wasn’t good. Kevin and I were also using our built-in laptop cameras so our video quality wasn’t great. But when it comes down to it, this was a test run that can be greatly improved upon- we just wanted to test it out, share the idea, and see what you folks think.

Prospects are, you want to create the best movie podcast on the earth.

Well, you do have to deal with your goals of what your remaining products will look like.

Cameras, light and management all come together to present that big “Hollywood” experience to current programs and flicks. Unfortunately for most of us, that products is way too costly to deal with.

That being said, the current option plans devoted to “the little guy” who wants to begin a movie podcast, can offer a “polished” product.

You just have to consider that you do not have a resources (yet!) and as your visitors expands, you can frequently create tiny changes that will quantity to a more expert development.

Even if you only have a pc mic and a web-cam or are going to history via an iPad or on a smart-phone, you can create an enjoyable movie for an Web visitors looking for unique information.

As extensive as your information is enjoyable, individuals will always enjoy while shamelessly giving your show to all their associates.

Tips for Lighting and Sound

Knowing your lighting and sound can make the difference between annoyed viewers and ecstatic viewers:

Lighting can make or break any production. Too much light, and the scene becomes a white blur. Not enough light and you can’t really see what is going on.

The best way for setting up your lighting, is based on a 3 light configuration. We have a fill light, a flood light and a back light. This insures that every angle will be visible on the camera.

You can pickup a lighting setup with all 3 lights for under $200. If you are on a shoestring budget, you can just pickup 3 small desk-lamps with bendable necks to use.

How do you define a video podcast?

Rob over at Vidcast School brought up these points about vidcasting being more than just video on an iDevice.   Here’s what he had to say:

A “vidcast” is video content distributed via the Internet. It had originally meant video content distributed via an RSS feed (or iTunes), but has now grown to include YouTube, Blip.TV and other such services. This also includes “set top boxes” like the Boxee Box, Apple TV, etc.

Flixwagon brings your iPhone live vidcasts!

One thing I’m sure a lot of iPhone fans were upset about this week was the lack of an announcement of video broadcasting capability in the 3G iPhone. I mean, OMG, how else are we supposed to make obsessive fan videos of Britney Spears?!

Don’t worry, the brilliant folks at Flixwagon are demonstrating live vidcasts from a jailbroken iPhone and are apparently working towards a true iPhone app that will work “as long as your battery lasts.”

TV networks? Who needs ’em! We’ll make our own entertainment.

Libraries increasing Digital Content

As tablet devices become more prevelant in the world, libraries are moving into the 21st century by “lending” digital content starting with e-books.  Here’s a story about the San Jose Public Library moving to digital lending.

E-books aren’t exactly a new phenomenon, and downloading them at the San Jose Public Library has been growing in popularity. In fact, library director Jane Light reports that e-book downloads in the library are up 100 percent in the last year.

And she expects that number to jump dramatically now that library patrons can download library e-books onto their Kindles.

It wasn’t until mid-September that Amazon made Kindle e-books available to libraries, and Light expects that will create a big surge in demand. She believes things will really start hopping shortly after Christmas. “I think there will be a lot of e-readers under the tree this year,” Light says.

While she has been nudging more and more of her budget toward e-book purchases, it’s not as simple as moving numbers from one column to another. This is the era of shrinking budgets and rapidly changing technology. Investing in new technology is always a risk, since the latest best thing might not be the latest best thing a little ways down the road.

On top of that, she says, purchasing hard copy books is a lot less complicated than acquiring e-books.

After years of experience with books, librarians have developed a good sense of how many books to purchase and how long they can expect them to stay on the shelf.

With e-books, libraries no longer deal directly with publishers; instead, they deal with vendors. What’s more, they no longer acquire books, they acquire licenses Advertisementand, according to Light, that’s where they get into a gray area.

Different vendors have different licensing rules.

One of the big controversies in library circles these days, Light says, is that some vendors propose that a license should be renewed after 26 downloads. And some suggest that every time a contract is renewed, the terms can change.
